Modification of Certification Requirements: Updates from ABMS and FSMB
The American Board of Medical Specialties released this statement regarding continuing certification during the COVID-19 outbreak. ABMS recognizes that the current priority of its diplomates and trainees is working on the front lines caring for patients. As a result, ABMS is allowing flexibility by providing enhanced activities and heightened education in partnership with specialty societies focused on COVID-19. In addition, it is offering deferment of activities or requirements and/or the extension of cycle deadlines, depending on the timing of activities in continuing certification programs in 2020.
The Federation of State Medical Boards website is updated daily with two lists:
- States that have waived or modified their licensure requirements for physicians to practice across state lines (33 states thus far)
- States that are welcoming retired and inactive physicians (16 states thus far).
