ID/HIV Experts: HIV Status Has No Place in Border Patrol Policy
IDSA, HIVMA, SHEA and PIDS released a statement in response to testimony by a U.S. Customs and Border Control official that immigrant children may be separated from their parents based on a parent’s HIV status. The testimony was given during a House of Representatives Judiciary Committee hearing on July 25. The Societies called for an immediate end to the policy citing that there is no justification for separating parents from their children based on their HIV status in addition to urging widespread implementation of basic protocols for infectious diseases prevention and treatment throughout detention centers.
