IDSA Participates in United Nations Hearing on TB
IDSA Global Health Committee member Maximo Brito, MD and Public Health Committee member Yukari Manabe, MD, FIDSA joined IDSA staff to participate in the UN civil society hearing on tuberculosis ahead of the UN High Level Meeting on Ending Tuberculosis, to be held during the UN General Assembly in New York in September.
The hearing presented an opportunity for UN member state missions to hear from civil society on priorities for the development of an impactful High Level Meeting outcome document. IDSA representatives participated in a UN missions lobbying day, and met with the U.S. and Dominican Republic missions to discuss priorities around prevention, treatment, and financing an accelerated global response to end the TB epidemic. IDSA is advocating for robust targets to help drive tangible progress following the High Level Meeting. We are also urging strong investments in research and development for a TB vaccine, rapid point-of-care diagnostics, and improved treatments, especially for multidrug resistant TB. Staff and Dr. Brito, who is from the Dominican Republic, were able to meet with the Dominican Republic Ambassador to the UN.
