The announcement by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on April 24 that measles cases in the United States have reached numbers unseen since the disease was declared eliminated here in 2000 brings with it the real possibility that measles could again become endemic in this country.

Each year, the American College of Physicians collects nominations for awards and masterships to recognize excellence and distinguished contributions to internal medicine. This year, the field of infectious diseases was well represented among those recognized. IDSA congratulates each of the recipients.

IDSA is proud to announce the launch of “IDSA Academy,” our new Learning Management System, this summer. This new system will give both members and nonmembers the ability to register, view and complete courses in a cleaner, more streamlined program; along with access to personal transcripts as well as new course offerings and activities.

IDSA Public Health Committee members visited 30 congressional offices on April 22 to advocate for our legislative priorities. Issues included increased investments in public health activities to address outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases and infections associated with the opioid epidemic, incentives to promote antibiotic research and development, antibiotic stewardship requirements, improved compensation for ID/HIV physicians, additional resources for global health responses, and increased funding for ID research and training.

The Hill published an op-ed by IDSA Global Health Committee member Krutika Kuppalli, MD, of Stanford University on the complex nature of the current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the need for additional resources.
