Pre-Meeting Workshops at IDWeek 2018
Come to San Francisco early to attend one (or two!) of the 11 pre-meeting workshops offered during IDWeek 2018. These workshops give attendees a chance to go more in-depth into various topics about infectious disease. From antimicrobial stewardship, to grant writing, to tuberculosis, these workshops have a little something for everyone.
The 11 pre-meeting workshops include those that attendees have come to love and expect like the Vincent T. Andriole ID Board Review Course and Fellows’ Day as well as four new offerings.
The four new workshops include:
1. Research Training Programs and Grant Writing Strategies for ID Physician-Scientists
Tuesday, October 2, 1 – 5 p.m.
The NIH is the most important source of funding for biomedical research in the U.S. This workshop will provide information about NIH research training support mechanisms for ID trainees and established investigators, review successful grantsmanship strategies, and offer a Q&A with NIH research staff. Attendees will participate in a mock grant review and round table discussions, and will learn about mentorship considerations and opportunities for ID physician-scientists.
2. Medication Assisted Treatment Waiver Course*
Tuesday, October 2, 1 – 5 p.m.
As Infectious Diseases and HIV physicians respond to the growing number of infections associated with injection drug use, they are uniquely positioned to initiate treatment for addiction while managing the patient’s infection. This four-hour workshop, paired with a four-hour online course completed after the live course will allow participants to obtain the waiver to prescribe buprenorphine to their patients with substance use disorders. Attendees will also gain the specific knowledge needed regarding the use of buprenorphine to manage opioid dependence in the outpatient setting. Finally, the course will also touch on the psychiatric and medical co-morbidities associated with opioid addiction. (AAP is the Data Sponsor for this training.)

3. How to Use EBM/GRADE to Develop Guidelines
Wednesday, October 3, 8 a.m. – Noon
The drive for the optimal guideline grading/rating of evidence framework has driven the emergence of the Grading of Recommendation Assessment, Development and Evaluation framework (GRADE). GRADE application in the production of clinical practice guidelines can result in trustworthy guideline recommendations, and as such it is imperative that persons who play a role in guideline panels have some training and orientation in the guideline development process itself, as well as an acute focus on the underpinnings of GRADE. This 4-hour workshop offers such training and orientation to attendees and particularly for those who plan to serve on guideline panels in the future.
4. A Sociobehavioral Approach to Infection Prevention and Antimicrobial Stewardship
Wednesday, October 3, 8 a.m. – Noon
At the core of antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention initiatives are efforts to improve the behavior of healthcare workers, administrative stakeholders, patients and visitors. Sociobehavioral dynamics shape the success of this work powerfully, but are not always given enough attention in research or practice. This workshop will provide attendees with an introduction to an overarching sociobehavioral framework through which to view antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention. Speakers will provide examples of practical sociobehavioral strategies that can be applied to facilitate improved practice across a variety of clinical settings.
