CDC AMR Threat Report Just the Tip of the Iceberg. This and More ID in the News
IDSA spokespersons were tapped extensively for comment on the recently released CDC Antibiotic Threat Report showing a staggering number of deadly antibiotic-resistant infections. CBS News spoke with IDSA spokesperson Dr. Priya Nori, Dr. Emily Spivak, FIDSA commented in CIDRAP and Modern Healthcare, and Dr. Sarah Doernberg in Infectious Disease News.
In an effort to combat antibiotic resistant infections, Dr. Nori believes patients should always ask questions about prescriptions. “Are there any alternatives to the condition I have or are antibiotics absolutely the answer. If so, what’s the shortest most effective duration I can take those antibiotics,” Dr. Nori said.
Dr. Spivak commented that it is important to educate the community. "We probably have made some significant strides in the hospital setting but the question for me is what is going on in the community," she said. "This is probably just the tip of the iceberg. Stewardship has always focused on the inpatient settings…but I think it's really time to expand our resources out of the traditional hospital settings in the United States."
