Urge Congress to Pass a Funding Bill with Investments in ID & HIV

October 1 was the first day of Fiscal Year 2020, but federal programs, including global and domestic ID/HIV programs, are operating at FY2019 funding levels through a Continuing Resolution (CR) signed by President Trump on September 27. IDSA and HIVMA members should urge Congress to pass a final funding bill for 2020 that includes investments in ID/HIV priorities.

The House of Representatives passed its health and foreign operations appropriations bills last spring, which provided increased resources for many IDSA and HIVMA funding priorities as outlined in IDSA and HIVMA press releases. The Senate Appropriations Committee released its health and foreign operations bills last month. While the bills provided increases for several of our ID/HIV funding priorities, greater resources are needed to combat domestic global infectious disease threats, including the growth of antimicrobial resistance, the expanding Ebola outbreak in the DRC, vaccine preventable illnesses, and infections related to the opioid epidemic. Congress must pass a final appropriations bill for 2020 prior to the expiration of the CR on Nov. 21 to avoid another CR or a government shutdown.  As the appropriations process moves forward, IDSA and HIVMA members will continue to urge Congress to pass a final FY2020 appropriations package that includes the increased funding for federal domestic and global ID/HIV programs included in the House and Senate funding bills.
